Short’s Fruit Shop, Shield St, Allendale. George Short (64yrs) and his wife Elizabeth (65yrs) are recorded as ‘Fruiterers’ here in the 1901 census but were not resident in the previous census in 1901. This premises subsequently became the Dale Hair Salon, from the 1950s to at least 2023.
In 1902, George Short – a fruiterer and saddler – ran his business at this Shield St premises at the southern end of Arnison Terrace. By 1906 this shop was a butcher’s shop belonging to Isaac Dixon. Charlton’s Shop,Shield Street, Allendale was destroyed by fire in 1983. Two sisters, including Miss Vesta Peart, had run a general dealers here after their step-father Mr Charlton retired. They were followed by Mr Tulip.
