Nicholas Liddell (left, 1986-1985) farmed at Catton, and Jack Stephenson (r) was heavily involved in village life. Apart from being a roadman, he taught dancing and played every week at dances every week at the Temperance Hall.

The bad snow of the 1947 winter when the village was cut off for around 8 weeks. The top of the wall bordering the Recreation Ground made a useful footpath ! That winter the goods railway agreed to take passengers, when it was running, so they could get to work.
Clearing a way into the village along Leadgate during the bad snows of 1947. The caterpillar tractor was one of Vickers’ (Scotswood Road, Newcastle) – tractor production here was later abandoned.
‘The Rec’ – Allendale Recreation Ground showing the two – grass then asphalt – tennis courts that existed into the late 1980s before being put to lawn.

Row of buildings on Leadgate, Allendale Town. The school kitchen and middle house were converted to one dwelling (a three bedroomed house), and the old joiner/undertaker’s workshop (most recently the workshop of Joe Bell (1908-1982) and previously the smithy of his uncle Abe Bell (1886-1945) awaits conversion.
A view during the severe winter of 1947 – Leadgate, looking west towards Allendale. The isolated building on the left was a wooden structure – a shop. Beyond is the old smithy where, by this time, Joe Bell (1908-82) made coffins for his undertaking workshop.
The building on the extreme left had most recently been used by Allendale First school as their school kitchen – and children walked from the First School to take their dinners in a dining hall, across the road in the Recreation Ground.
