Carrshield -

Roll of Honour of seventeen Carrshield former pupils who served in the Great War, of whom four lost their lives. Originally placed in the school until its closure in the 1960s it is now located behind the font in St Mark’s Church, Ninebanks.

Allenheads - Circa 1915

Private Gilbert Graham of Allenheads served in the 30th Northumberland Fusiliers. Gilbert was born at Sipton Shield as one of ten siblings. He died at the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval monument. Also pictured in Hexham Courant, 22 July 1916

John Henry Reed (1897-1979) served in the Great War. Born in Sipton, near Allenheads (see also 0005026)  

Swinhope - Circa 1916

Tom Reed (b. Abt. 190o). Lived at Hope Head, Spartylea. In 1911 census, he was 11yrs old and living with his parents John and Emma, and younger siblings Hannah, John and Nora.

Allendale Town - Circa 1942

Lawrence Smith (1921-2022), of Lonkley Head, Allendale. Longtime postman in Allendale he was also a leading light in the NYE Tar Barrel organisation.

Allen Smith (1912-2019). Allen served as an engineer on RAF planes during the Second World War, and cheated death in Belgium when a plane swooped low to fire bullets at him and his friend. They both dived into separate ditches for cover but while Allen survived, his friend was not so fortunate.  Back home, Allen worked … read more
