Originally this was the Allenheads school. Up to the 1850’s, classes were taught by the minister, Rev. W. Walton who was curate at St. Peters in 1827. The school on Fawside was built 1848.

Allenheads - Circa 1916

William Vickers (1896-1917), had been a joiner in Allenheads when he joined up aged 18 in November 1915.  A private in the Durham Light Infantry, he died just 17 months later and is buried at St Peter’s churchyard.

Miss Barrows sweet shop at Ropehaugh. Possibly the window is still there, although the shop has long since closed and become living accommodation.

A postcard view showing Dovespool – note the shop at left of row. The house in the centre of the picture was the ‘Candle House’ where miners would purchase their candles for work and lighting their homes. The building in front of this later housed Bob Maddison’s dwelling and art studio.
