Allenheads - Circa 1985

Allenheads School, overlooking Fawside Green. Built in 1848 by T.W Beaumont, his mining agent Thomas Sopwith directed the location as he felt the air higher up the hillside – and the walk up to it – would be beneficial to the children.

From 1878 it became a Board School managed by the Allendale and West Allen School Board and then, in 1903, it an all age council school. The senior pupils were transferred in 1953 to Allendale Town School. In 1955 it was temporarily closed through staff illness and in 1968 when the head was ill remaining pupils were transferred to Allendale County Primary School. The school closed on 6 January 1969.
