  1. General Discussion

I lived at Slaghill cottages (right end to the road) with my Grandfather Edwin Ridley and Elizabeth Ridley (formerly Dixon) of Nenthead. Tough times, beautiful, and never forgotten. I remember everything in my dreams; and beyond.

I’m afraid you are way out on the date for this postcard; it appears on Francis Frith’s site and is captioned “Allenheads, Slag Hill Cottages c.1965”.

    1. Hi Doug

The date is a little speculative and almost certainly incorrect. However, since Frith died in 1898 Feb 25th it is also unlikely that the picture was taken by him in 1965. The discrepancy may be on the publication date of the postcard and could be an attempt by someone to keep the image in copyright. Frith took up photography sometime in the 1840s and set up his studio in 1850.Frith and Co was set up in 1860 to sell his work including overseas photography. He set about recording every village in England, but often farmed out work to local photographers, so we don’t know if he took this shot. The Frith Collection is the creation of a cigarette company executive who bought the archive in 1977. Paul Mingard
