Chair: David Bates
Colonel David Bates is a former head of the Army’s Nursing Services, and is still in the Army Reserves, providing training in various exotic places. He is particularly interested in researching local WWI history, including the War Memorial project, exploring the people whose names appear on Allen Valleys memorials.
Vice-Chair: Dorothy Collier
Born and bred in Allendale, Dorothy’s lifelong interest in local history focuses in particular on family histories, together with the preservation and archiving of Allen Valleys historical records and traditions.
Treasurer: Sheila Adams
Secretary: Lesley MacDonald
Lesley’s interest in local history in general was sparked by some research into the history of an Allendale house her family owned for most of the 20th century.
Membership Secretary: John Dobson
John’s main interests are in cultural history and the history of landscape, including man-made landscapes such as gardens and planted woodland.
Since moving from Northern Ireland 40-odd years ago, Gloria has always found graveyards a good starting point for researching family and local histories. In the Allen Valleys, she has become interested in lead mining and archaeology, and how local history links with national events.
Born and bred in Allenheads, Stewart is interested in all aspects of local family and industrial history.
